What does Sports College status mean to the school and the community?

It means that we have a direct link with the DfES and an agreement whereby:

  • We develop sport in our community in accordance with an agreed plan
  • They provide us with some extra funding (about £150,000 per year)

The additional money allows us to do a number of things:-

Employ extra P.E. teachers and a Sports Technician:-

  • Add to our facilities and equipment
  • Employ specialist coaches in particular sports
  • Arrange sporting events and competitions

We hope that by these means we will be able to enhance involvement in sport and sporting excellence in our school and in the wider community. Most particularly we hope to promote that enjoyment of sport and physical recreation which leads to ongoing involvement and a more healthy and active community.

Although the range of sports we are involved in is very wide, our traditional 'big' sports like Football, netball and athletics continue to have real importance. Other focus sports are:

  • Gymnastics (and Dance)
  • Table Tennis
  • Health Related Exercise / Athletics
  • Cricket
  • Football

We have a particular mission for developing these sports; in other respects the school is not much changed; this is still a comprehensive school serving the local area. Although there is a specific focus on sport we still hold absolutely to our belief in striving for the very best possible academic outcomes. We believe that a happy and successful involvement in sport can be a very positive way of raising achievement in all aspects of school life.
